In all previous examinations, starting in 2004, we compared the cells made on one technology. Most of these were ordinary lead-acid batteries with liquid electrolyte. However, on the market there are products with different “genetics”, which should give them special features. So, apart from service and completely maintenance-free batteries (read: with available jams and all those without) can be purchased AGM batteries (with absorbent glass Mat); EFB batteries (cheap alternative to the AGM, differ from the ordinary except that the separator design); and while rare TPPL AGM batteries (another version of AGM-batteries with grids made of pure lead without admixture of calcium). A total of five types.

The benefits of a more advanced battery is well known. For example, the specific energy of simple battery is 30-40 WH/kg, made by technology AGM — 40-45 WH/kg, and TPPL AGM technology — up to 50 W·h/kg. the life expectancy of these batteries is four to five, five to six and from eight to twelve years. Advanced batteries can work in a mode “start-stop”, which simple products are contraindicated. And their self discharge rate must be lower several times.

But does it make sense install fancy the battery on vehicles without “start-stop” and powerful audio systems? We checked that we rarely check: how long do new batteries of different types and price ranges will be able to give the same load currents. At the same time defining the real capacity, which is highly dependent on the value given by the battery current. And find out I always expensive battery can replace the plainor it is not worth chasing the price.

For an unusual experiment we acquired five batteries with as close as possible dimensions and the stated ampere-hours. The simplest type is Tyumen Tyumen 6ST‑70L, completely maintenance free — SMF Medalist 57412; EFB and AGM batteries are respectively the Moll EFB 82070 and Monbat AGM 570 901 076, and the rarest option, TPPL AGM is an Odyssey PC1500 34/78. Brief characteristics of all participants are shown in table.

Resource, discharge and test methods

We are often asked to determine the expertise of the resource panels. And is it necessary? Because the average figures are known (see above). Wait for the results of the real test is meaningless — their after market range of batteries are fully updated. And accelerated tests are only estimates. For example, the battery of last year’s test experts chase still checking out different methods of accelerated aging. And for a year all batteries behave the same way.

To determine the real capacity of the batteries will go the other way. Many people mistakenly attribute the battery life with the size of the discharge — within a family, these values are comparable. Normal battery self-discharge is about 5% per month, and AGM-batteries — about 2 %. But any of the battery leakage current is still much less than the real consumption at the parked car, reaching at times up to 0.1 A. Here and check how long different batteries will be able to provide consumers with stored energy.

In this place will not just carry out a comparative testing of batteries in different price and technological categories.

The discharge of the batteries we recorded in three modes listed below.

  • IN THE PARKING LOT. The load is 150 Ohms, the current consumption of about 80 mA approximately drains the battery of a modern parked car with the alarm. The batteries are loaded to the eyeballs, with all the plot was different. Then, each battery was loaded with a reference ballast resistor and daily recorded a lower voltage level. Critical point, corresponding to full discharge to 10.5 V.
  • RESERVE. The test we carry out all assessments, when determining the reserve capacity of the tested batteries. It simulates the operation mode of the battery on the car with the faulty generator in cold slushy weather, work lights, wipers, heater, fan. Current consumption in this case is usually taken equal to 25 A. a Fully charged battery, we loaded a resistance of 0.5 Ohm. The terminal voltage was recorded every five minutes.
  • “THE MOST COMPLETE”. The hardest and the most short test in our test. Charging the battery, we simulated the maximum load when the user has connected all: heating glass, mirrors, seats, powerful music, lighting. The load is 0.2 Ohm, current is 60 A. Every five minutes checking the voltage at the terminals.

And what happened?

Before beginning any tests, always weighing options participants. Cheap Tyumen battery with old-fashioned tubes and the liquid electrolyte is unlikely to be able to compete on an equal footing with expensive Odysseus, within which there must be very pure lead. On the other hand — why not? We do not force them to work in a mode “start-stop” or even upside down! And to issue the required currents must all, regardless of price and technology.

Miracles began pretty quickly. At a load of 80 mA Odyssey, whose initial open circuit voltage was higher than the other, began to turn sour on the tenth day, actually being in the group. Through three weeks he has already trailed behind, and on the 36th day of the test, the electrical giant of thought collapsed — right up to 5.6 In!

On the following day surrendered Moll. By this point it was obvious that to win Medalist: he has maintained the highest terminal voltage. However, something unexpected happened — from 11.46 In he famously slid to 5.65 and ceased resistance. On the 42nd day exhausted Monbat, and in the evening of the same day a critical point “10.5” reached and fully discharge Tyumen battery. The situation is turned on its head: “plebeyo” was the best, and Grand last.

The following load current is 25 A. In the 96th minute gave up Monbat AGM, after another minute over pendants from Moll EFB. And he won… again Tyumen “bride”, to be held as much as 125 minutes. Odyssey this time looked good but still lost to the winner 9 minutes.

When the load 60 But — and this is a serious currents! first out of the game again Monbat. Here’s AGM. In the 33rd minute numbers on the control voltmeter quickly flashed, rolled over down: charge no more. A minute later it was followed by the Moll EFB technology. The third folded Medalist, and silver got the same Odyssey, which gave a few moments all the same “the Siberian” Tyumen.

Thus, the cheapest and most “non-pedigreed” Siberian battery actually won “one-gate”, winning in all competitions. But we originally agreed that the winners define will not. Important fact: the price tags and titles can be useful when solving simple problems.
