System Head-up Display (HUD) is borrowed from military aviation, where they were designed to optimize sight guidance. On a stock car HUD system first came in 1988 through the efforts of General Motors — its in monochrome versions, got the sedan Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Then came the colored version, but initially only in the premium segment. In our days the HUD start to put in more simple machines.

How it works

The electronic unit projector receives data from the diagnostic block OBD (on-board diagnostics) car, processes them, and sends the image on the reflective coating. The image is displayed on the windshield or retractable transparent screen — commercially implemented both schemes.

All the data available to the OBD, may be rendered on the screen: speed, engine speed, coolant temperature, fuel quantity, information about the faults… until the readings of any sensor. With the advent of onboard navigation became possible to “spread” on the glass route and tips about the road signs.

Some time after the start of mass installation of a HUD system on the production cars began to appear ersatz gadgets, joined with automotive electronics and performs the same function. Today you can get quite a budget option for a HUD, just by downloading the mobile app and setting the smartphone on the dashboard. However, the “phone” image suffer from glare and bad quality, and the range of information shown is limited.

Some of the problem is vague, the work HUD in different lighting conditions, especially in bright sunlight. Factories remove this disadvantage by adjusting the operating characteristics of the reflecting surface and the projector. In the case of smartphones, this task no one is not going to solve — and so it goes.

Supplemented reality

Further development of the HUD associated with the use of augmented reality (augmented reality, AR). Connected to the case of the regular car electronics, able to analyze the environment and identify its elements such as markings, pedestrians, road signs, vehicles, direction of moving objects, their velocity and acceleration. And if you look just a little further in the future, HUD will be able to contact the communication services between vehicles (Car-to-Car) and with the infrastructure (Car-to-X).

For systems of new generation established a generic term for the AR-HUD. The development started in the beginning of the century, and soon many companies reported on the readiness of the devices for implementation. What unites them is the ability to add the data coming from the OBD, operative information on road conditions.

At first, the design of such a HUD is usually used a system of mirrors, which combined created the projector image with the real world. Along the way, it was possible to achieve greater angular size of the image and to vary the virtual distance from driver eye to form pictures. For example, “paint” navigation arrows on the road.

The practical application was hampered by the fact that the set of devices takes a large amount. One of the developments of Continental, in particular, was drawn to 13 liters, a similar volume of standard bucket. Try to place it under the instrument panel. Naturally, this did not cause the tide of enthusiasm among car manufacturers who save every gram and centimeter. And developers began to puzzle over the more sophisticated and compact designs.

The solution was found quite quickly – in fact, a mirrored version is outdated, barely standing on the conveyor. Today, more than actual holography using optical waveguides, where the light source is LEDs or lasers. Too expensive, but very compact and the prospects for fantastic. The projector of the new generation having the same dimensions as its predecessor, can stretch it out to almost all the windshield. In theory, HUD such a level, interacting with the Internet, a relatively realistic show the driver not only information linked to the route such as the nearest café, but also the existence of vacant tables and, if required, a menu to order. And it fits perfectly with the trend towards giving the vehicle functions closest friend and assistant driver.

A sense of proportion

A group of canadian scientists carried out in 2015, a series of experiments and proved that the overabundance of visual information people in 7-10% of cases misses the most important information or perceives it correctly. And warned the public about the reckless use of the AR-HUD. According to scientists, the increase in the volume of information received by the driver, blurs his focus and concentration. Manufacturers of systems, in turn, positioning them as devices that increase safety.

And the truth lies somewhere in the middle. The usefulness of the HUD depends on the sense of proportion — and of the creators, and the driver who has the ability to add or remove output, leaving only those that really need it.

But as in airplanes?

Aviation today is unthinkable without the HUD. The system allows to compactly represent a lot of information that is scattered across dozens of conventional displays (HDD — head-down display), and update the data set, depending on the current phase of flight.
