Our experiment

At the editorial Largus installed trip computer Multitronics C-590, which among other things allows you to track and the temperature of the coolant of the engine with an accuracy of one degree. Warm up the engine

Standard mode engine warm-up: two minutes of standstill after the launch until reaching a coolant temperature of 25°C. Then, a quiet movement without undue stress, without sudden accelerations.

With this method of warming up the engine of the Largus with a piece of cardboard in front of radiator became faster warm up to operating temperature. The gain in time to reach the desired temperature (82°C) with a cut-out is 2-3 minutes. And it’s a lot, especially for small trips.

In the course of the experiment revealed an interesting effect. The engine without the cardboard after some time after the beginning of the movement suddenly dropping the temperature from 82°C to 78°C. the Reason: a portion of the ice antifreeze from the radiator, which released the opened thermostat, and cooling the entire system. Now this effect is gone. Thus, the box provides a slightly better operating temperature of the engine.

But on the rate of cooling of the engine off the cardboard almost no effect. It will help only a complete insulation of the entire engine compartment.

Warming up of salon

Comfort in winter travel has increased: in the salon before warmer, faster moisten glass. Under the same settings of the heater the inside temperature was 5-7°C higher. It helps you to warm up. And again, this difference will be especially noticeable for short trips.

Keep in mind that all the calculations are given in mild subzero conditions overboard for a regular petrol aspirated motor. Even more noticeable the effect of the cartons will be in the cold or for engines, which because of its design features are heated relatively slowly: it’s diesels and gasoline engines with direct fuel injection and turbocharging.

Is it possible to overheat the engine?

There is a perception that the cardboard box can easily overheat the engine, for example, when driving on the highway. Checked. At the same zero temperature when moving with a speed of 100 km/h the electric fan does not turn on, the temperature of the liquid in the engine cooling system does not exceed 90°C. This is not surprising: as is known, low speed of rotation of the blower motor, the Largus is activated when the coolant temperature exceeds 99°C, and is deactivated at 96°C. So that the overheating far. In case of a prolonged slippage in the snow the temperature can crawl up, but the blower motor will cope in such conditions.
