Winter tyres: myth and reality

Every year with the arrival of cold weather are being actively discussed features of operation of winter tires. It would seem, collated and analysed all related matters.

Tnevertheless, there are a number of myths that still believe not just start driving. Nokian Tyres helps to understand how things really are.

Winter tyres increase fuel consumption.

Fuel consumption depends on the rolling resistance of a tyre: the lower the level, the less fuel is burned. This principle applies not only to the summer tires, it is absolutely fair and in relation to winter tyres. Another thing is that the sub-zero temperature and the inevitable extra fuel consumption, warm up the engine. In the case of wheel spin in the snow and on the ice when the engine is operating in a more intensive mode, fuel consumption is also higher. And since such a situation is not uncommon in the winter, motorists are more likely to stop at a gas station than in the spring or summer.

Winter tyres reduce driving comfort

This is not true. More than 80 years ago, the Finns made the first winter tyres just for the fact that drivers were not only safe, but also comfortable on slippery and snowy roads. In our days, the comfort and safety of driving are also in the bundle. Weather features in Ukraine are that comfortable driving winter tires should provide the same reliable grip with the road surface and in the frost and the thaw.

Loss of 2-3 spikes leads to an imbalance

Unless we are talking about tires, studded artisanal way random spikes. If to speak about factory studding, then, first, the computer simulation gives the possibility to calculate the optimal location of each thorn, and modern technologies allow to strengthen him so well that the loss is virtually eliminated. And secondly, the spike weighs about one gram, so that even if a tyre will lose several adjacent studs, it will not create problems for its balance and stability of the car.

On the pavement, the spikes are blunt

In relation to high-tech studded tires is pure fiction. Structure, rubber compound and tread design to these tires developed under a certain number and shape of spines. Due to this load spikes is distributed evenly, which prevents them from blunting.

Thus, many popular myths have nothing to do with reality. It should be stressed that in the changeable conditions of the Ukrainian winter, the confidence and peace of mind behind the wheel is largely dependent on the quality of the installed on the car tire. So when choosing them it is logical to be guided by accurate information, for example, results of independent comparative tests and not myths.
